The fashion for Fauntleroy suits for little boys was well-established by the time Ed was born, after the publication of Frances Hodgson Burnett's wildly popular novel in 1886. Many American boys were as a result dressed as the novel's hero, Cedric: "What the Earl saw was a graceful, childish figure in a black velvet suit, with a lace collar, and with lovelocks waving about the handsome, manly little face, whose eyes met his with a look of innocent good-fellowship." The boys' own reactions varied.
