Birth dates are from the 1900 and 1910 Federal censuses for Grass Valley.

According to the 1910 census, Lewis J. MURDOCK [sic] was a school principal; he and his sister Mary boarded with a family in Grass Valley.

The Westerfield girls were all sisters, and the Vanlandinghams were brother and sister. The French girls were apparently not sisters, but may have been cousins; there were a number of French families in Grass Valley at the time.

R. Petersen writes "Nyborg 27-2-1911 Dear son, Thanks for the card for mother's birthday and thanks for what we found [in it?]. We are glad you are healthy and things are good. A postcard view of Trondheim "av sendar Karoline HANSEN, Kongensgt. no. 90a [?], Thjen [?] Norvay", addressed to "Mr Alf FEILAND [?] udr P.T. Pederson, Kathryn, N.D.A.K. Amerika", which has been crossed out with possibly "71 Ransom" pencilled in, and "cfo [c/o?] John Stronstad".

Kathryn is a town in North Dakota; Ransom is in Ransom Co., ND.

Karoline wrote across the river in the picture, "hvis ikke uiren [?] findes saa bides [?] dette til bage sent" -- possibly an apology for the unsatisfactory message on the other side -- and on the back "Thjen 16-7-1913. Mange tak for brevet som jeg ikke har fodt. jeg lever bare vel. haaber du gjor det samme jeg har ikke mere at skrive om bare en hilsen til dig fra Karoline" -- she thanks him for a letter, is well and hoping he is the same, but has no more to write except best wishes.

Fred Curl

"Fred Amos CURL Picture taken Aug 1900 5 yrs 4 mo old Ina CURL owner". Fred was photographed by Edington of Marysville, Kans.

UPDATE:

Frederick A. Curl, age 5 (born April 1895), appears on the 1900 Federal census in the household of Alvin D., a farmer, and Susan M. Curl, in Farmington and Highland Townships, Washington Co., Kansas. He was adopted. With them were adopted daughter Mary J. Curl, age 8, boarders Lulu E. Early and Stella M. Early, and hired hand Enoch A. Troxel. (Source: "United States Census, 1900," database with images, FamilySearch (https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:MMYY-BXT : accessed 1 September 2019), Enoch A Troxel in household of Alvin D Curl, Farmington and Highland Townships, Washington, Kansas, United States; citing enumeration district (ED) 132, sheet 1B, family 22, NARA microfilm publication T623 (Washington, D.C.: National Archives and Records Administration, 1972.); FHL microfilm 1,240,503.)

Fred A. Curl, age 15, appears on the 1910 census with adoptive parents David A. Curl, 46, and Margaret Curl, 37, in Pasadena, Los Angeles Co., California, with sister Ina Curl (also noted as being adopted). David was born in Ohio, and Margaret in Iowa; both of the children were born in Kansas. Both of the children's parents are noted as having been born in the US (father) and in Germany (mother), so perhaps they were brother and sister. David had an independent income. (Source: "United States Census, 1910," database with images, FamilySearch (https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:MVLC-45Y : accessed 1 September 2019), Fred A Curl in household of David A Curl, Pasadena Ward 5, Los Angeles, California, United States; citing enumeration district (ED) ED 314, sheet 13A, family 361, NARA microfilm publication T624 (Washington D.C.: National Archives and Records Administration, 1982), roll 86; FHL microfilm 1,374,099.)

Fred Amos Curl's 1917 draft registration card gives his birthdate as 19 April 1895 in Hardy, Nebraska. His residence was Tulare, Calif., where he was a farmer and lived with his wife and child. He is described as tall and slender, with blue eyes and brown hair, with an injury to his left shoulder which left him physically unfit for service. (Source: "United States World War I Draft Registration Cards, 1917-1918", database with images, FamilySearch (https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:KZKH-YPL : 24 August 2019), Fred Amos Curl, 1917-1918.)

H. Curl (sic), age 30, born in Nebraska of Nebraska parentage, appears on the 1920 census in Bakersfield, Kern Co., California, with wife Florence, 28, and son Harlan, 3 1/2. It is entirely possible that the enumerator spoke with a neighbor or employer, which would explain the anomalies in this particular entry compared to the others for Fred Curl. He was an "oil worker". (Source: "United States Census, 1920," database with images, FamilySearch (https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:MHQM-9XT : accessed 1 September 2019), Harlan Curl in household of H Curl, Bakersfield Ward 2, Kern, California, United States; citing ED 89, sheet 15B, line 95, family 61, NARA microfilm publication T625 (Washington D.C.: National Archives and Records Administration, 1992), roll 100; FHL microfilm 1,820,100.)

Fred A. Curl, age 35, appears on the 1930 census in Norwalk, Los Angeles Co., California, with wife Florence, also 35, and son Harlan, 14. Fred and Florence had been married about fourteen years earlier (ca.1916). He had been born in Nebraska of Ohio and Holland parentage (father and mother respectively), and was an oil well surveyor. (Source: "United States Census, 1930," database with images, FamilySearch (https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:XC8N-2HW : accessed 1 September 2019), Harlan Curl in household of Fred A Curl, Norwalk, Los Angeles, California, United States; citing enumeration district (ED) ED 1193, sheet 2B, line 58, family 40, NARA microfilm publication T626 (Washington D.C.: National Archives and Records Administration, 2002), roll 167; FHL microfilm 2,339,902.)

On the 1940 census, Fred O. Curl [sic] was enumerated in Highland, San Bernardino Co., California. He lived at Patton State Hospital, where he worked as an "orchard man" -- much of San Bernardino County in the early years of the 20th century was citrus groves. Fred was 45 years old and divorced. (Source: "United States Census, 1940," database with images, FamilySearch (https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:K9H9-143 : 27 July 2019), Fred O Curl, Highland Judicial Township, San Bernardino, California, United States; citing enumeration district (ED) 36-48, sheet 52A, line 1, family 53, Sixteenth Census of the United States, 1940, NARA digital publication T627. Records of the Bureau of the Census, 1790 - 2007, RG 29. Washington, D.C.: National Archives and Records Administration, 2012, roll 289.)

Fred Amos Curl's 1942 draft registration card gives his birthdate as 19 April 1895 in Republic, Kansas. His current residence was San Bernardino, Calif. and his employer the Patton State Hospital; his nearest relative was David Curl of Pasadena. Fred is described as 6 ft. tall, 176 lbs., with blue eyes, brown hair, and a ruddy complexion, with a scar on his left shoulder. (Source: "United States World War II Draft Registration Cards, 1942," database with images, FamilySearch (https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:V48P-P49 : 8 November 2017), Fred Amos Curl, 1942; citing NARA microfilm publication M1936, M1937, M1939, M1951, M1962, M1964, M1986, M2090, and M2097 (Washington D.C.: National Archives and Records Administration, n.d.).)

Fred A. Curl died 12 March 1956 in San Bernardino, Calif. He had been born 19 April 1895 in Kansas, his father's surname being Curl and his mother's Ginder. (Source: "California Death Index, 1940-1997," database, FamilySearch (https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:VPDK-ZYG : 26 November 2014), Ginder in entry for Fred A Curl, 12 Mar 1956; Department of Public Health Services, Sacramento.)

Herbert L. Wheeler

"Herbert L. WHEELER, age 16 years 6 mos", photographed by Hotchkiss of Norwich, N.Y., probably in 1885.

Marietta Davis, an unknown boy, and the M.E. Church, Yankton, D.T.

These items were found together in the 1980s or 1990s in a second-hand copy of Lang's translation of "The Odyssey".

The first tintype is framed in what looks to be copper, in turn attached to a piece of shiny embossed white paper that folds towards the back into a kind of envelope. The frame is 2 cm x 2.5 cm; the envelope is 6.3 cm x 10 cm.

The second tintype, pasted securely into an embossed paper frame, is in very poor condition and has lost almost all of its image except for a folded pair of hands. This photograph has a probably-contemporary note on the reverse, "Marietta DAVIS, 5 years".

It is not clear if the separate photographer's label from Teague's of Lewiston, Maine belongs with the photograph of Marietta Davis -- the paper is very similar in color and texture but slightly larger across.

Although on separate pieces of paper, the photograph of the front elevation of the M.E. Church, Yankton, Dakota Territory, and the photographer's label from S.J. Morrow, Yankton, Dakota Territory, apparently go together, by the size and color of the paper.

Ed Wilson

Edson Smith WILSON was born 19 August 1899 in Kansas. He died November 1976.

The fashion for Fauntleroy suits for little boys was well-established by the time Ed was born, after the publication of Frances Hodgson Burnett's wildly popular novel in 1886. Many American boys were as a result dressed as the novel's hero, Cedric: "What the Earl saw was a graceful, childish figure in a black velvet suit, with a lace collar, and with lovelocks waving about the handsome, manly little face, whose eyes met his with a look of innocent good-fellowship." The boys' own reactions varied.
