Grubbses, Campbells, Sutters, and Hodils: The case of the missing will (Henry Strohm of Indiana Tp., Allegheny Co.)

The will of Henry Strohm of Indian Tp., Allegheny Co., Pennsylvania appears to be missing from the microfilmed roll of original probate files available at FamilySearch.  It does, however, appear in the relevant volume of copies filed with the county.  Since I had a difficult time finding it, and it doesn't seem to have been consulted by Strohm or Hodil genealogists (because a death date is not given for Henry), I include the pages here, with a full transcription, in the hope that it may be useful to others.

The will was mentioned in a Hodil genealogy, possibly by Pamela Myers-Grewell, so presumably either the original will or the copy volume was available in 1981, when Joseph Klaus cleared and recorded the Strohm cemetery in Fox Chapel as his Eagle Scout project.  The FamilySearch roll was filmed 29 January 1990.  It is certainly possible, though, that the original document is on the roll somewhere but not in sequential order, since the copy appears wedged in between numbers 84 and 85 -- no.84 is p.128 in the roll of originals, and no.85 is p.130, so clearly no.129 is out of sequence or missing.

The name "Strohm" appears in various spellings even among the family.  I assume that Henry himself spelled it "Strohm" in 1816 but that the transcribing clerk read "Strohrn," since it usually if not always appears with that misspelling in the copy.

Last Will and Testament of Henry Strohrn [sic] Dec’d.

In the name of God Amen I Henry Strohrn [sic] of Indiana township Allegheny County and State of Pennsylvania being weak in body and low in sickness, but sound in mind and considering well the frailty of human nature and being desirous to settling my worldly affairs, and preparing for the change which God in his wisdom may make on this my mortal state do make and ordain this my last will & testament.

Item. I do empower my wife Mary Strohrn [sic] to act in full power as executrix of this my last will and testament having all power the same as I should have were I living in all cases whatever thereunto belonging provided she shall well and truly perform all the requisites therein contained. Also I do appoint and constitute Henry Snively of Pitt township Allegheny County Executor of this said will and testament with the provisions as before mentioned, and in case of the death of the death of the [sic] said Henry Snively, she the said Mary Strohrn [sic] is fully empowered to choose another executor in the room of him the said Snively but not otherwise. And should the said Mary Strohrn [sic] feel approaching dissolution, she is fully empowered to make her last will and testament as she in her sound judgement may see expedient and proper -- and in all cases whatever shall act with the power as I should do with the consent of the said Executor. And should she the said Mary marry and make away with any of said estate then her dower shall cease in all cases respecting this said will, excepting such power as the law shall give and no other.

Item. I do also leave all my property, under the care and management of her the said Mary to conduct for the benefit of my children under the restrictions, power and privations as above decribed [sic] and stated.

In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand this fifth day of February one thousand eight hundred and sixteen. Signed in presence of us, --drew [torn] Means. Jacob Hodil. James Martin.

Henry Strohrn [sic].

Allegheny County Ss. On the 28th day of May A.D. 1834 personally appeared

before me John M. Snowden Register for the probate of wills &c. Jacob Hodil one of the subscribing witnesses to the foregoing will, who being duly sworn according to law did depose and say, that he was present and heard Henry Strohm [sic?] declare the foregoing testament of writing to be his last will and testament, that he signed his name as a witness at the request of said Strohrn [sic] -- and that the said Strohrn [sic] was at the time of making the said declaration of perfect and sound mind memory and understanding to the best of his knowledge observation and beleif [sic]. (The other two subscribing witnesses being deceased.) on the same day John Parsons appeared before said Register and being sworn declared, That a few days before his decease Henry Strohrn [sic] the testator, Showed deponent the foregoing Instrument of writing and declared to him that it was his last will and testament -- and that at the time said Strohm [sic?] was of perfect and sound mind memory and understanding according to the best of deponents knowledge observation and beleif [sic]. -- same day William Crawford appeared before said Register and being sworn declared that he is well acquainted with the handwriting of the deceased -- that he has frequently seen him write -- and that he verily beleives [sic] that the signature Henry Strohrn [sic] to the foregoing Instrument of writing is in the proper hand writing of the said testator. Given under my hand the date aforesaid. John M. Snowden, Register. Recorded May 28th, A.D. 1834.
Thus we can say that Henry Strohm died some time between the writing of his will on 5 February 1816 and its filing on 28 May 1834.  Since Henry Strohm (presumably the same one) appears on the Federal censuses for Indiana Tp. in 1810 and 1820, we can narrow that down to between 1820-1834, or certainly before 28 May 1834.

(Discussing Klaus's research, the Hodil article says that "when Strohm died, he left his wife everything unless she took up with another man, in which case [she] would receive nothing."  The way this is quoted makes Strohm sound vindictive, but it was in fact a not-uncommon stipulation, in the days when a husband controlled his wife's property, since a second husband could theoretically dispose of the property a wife had inherited from her first husband, thereby not only letting the property go out of the family but also depriving the first husband's children of their potential inheritance.  The fact that Henry named his wife Mary as executrix -- although another executor is also designated -- indicates that he at the very least thought well enough of her to be confident in her ability to oversee the estate, e.g. was "fully empowered to make her last will and testament as she in her sound judgement may see expedient and proper -- and in all cases whatever shall act with the power as I should do".  For more information on wills and dower, see "Wills and Testaments : I Do Hereby Bequeath..." by Donna Przecha, and the "Probate" article at the Ancestry wiki.)

Grubbses, Campbells, Sutters, and Hodils: Margaret Grubbs and her husband Samuel Hodil

Lottie Campbell's sister Emma appears on the 1880 census in Indiana Tp., Allegheny Co., living with Samuel Hodil, 74, and his wife Margaret, 65. Emma is listed as "domestic servant" and "grandniece". Margaret, it turns out, was born a Grubbs, so here is a likely connection with the mother "Sarah Grubbs" mentioned on the death certificate of Emma's and Lottie's younger sister Sarah's death certificate.

Hodil families on the 1870 Federal census.

Samuel and Margaret Hodil's family is fairly easy to track.  Their nine children were as follows:
  • Frederick Hodil, b.5 July 1832. He married Ann Campbell some time in the early 1860s.
  • John Hodil, b.20 June 1834. He married Sarah Jane Wible around 1860.
  • George Gilliam Hodil, b.15 September 1836. He married Mary Jane Hassinger, some time before 1880.
  • Susanna Hodil, b.17 April 1839. She married George Weber in 1859.
  • Sarah Ann Hodil, b.2 July 1842. She married John Shaw around 1885.
  • Samuel J. Hodil, b.30 September 1844. He married Sarah Jane Henry in the mid-1860s.
  • James C. Hodil, b.29 April 1847. He married Anna M. Sutter around 1871.
  • Rachel M. Hodil, b.20 September 1850. She married George Hassinger around 1872.
  • Margaret M. Hodil, b.9 November 1854. She married John R. Rickenbaugh about 1875.
(Mary Jane Hassinger (1844-1933) and George Hassinger (1850-1933) were brother and sister, found on the 1850 census in Indiana Tp. with their parents Henry and Eliza Hassinger. It was probably not the first time, and certainly not the last, that siblings in the Grubbs and Hodil families married siblings in another.)

This family appears in various permutations in Indiana Tp., on the Federal censuses for 1850, 1860, 1870 and 1880 -- their name is found spelled "Huddle" and "Hoddil" before it settles down to "Hodil". Margaret died 20 July that year, and Samuel seven years later, on 18 August; they were both buried in Pine Creek cemetery.  (Frederick, John, George, Rachel, and Margaret, and their respective spouses, were also buried in Pine Creek.)

There do not, unfortunately, appear to be any Grubbs brides or grooms in the mid- or late-1800s in the "Pennsylvania Marriages, 1709-1940" database at FamilySearch.

Anna Sutter, James's wife, was as it happens the daughter of Ursula Sutter, the mysterious Lotta Sutter's "aunt" on the 1880 census.  This therefore gives us two connections now to Lottie Campbell McCully, the Sutter one (the family who took her in) and the Hodil one (Emma's great-aunt being Margaret Grubbs Hodil), three if you count that Margaret was born a Grubbs.

Assuming that Emma's, Lottie's, and Sarah's family had been broken up -- since they certainly do not appear together in Allegheny Co. on the 1880 census -- we can say that it is probable that one or the other, and more likely both, of their parents had died by 1880.

Grubbses, Campbells, Sutters, and Hodils: Lottie Campbell (Sutter) McCully

All that has been known about the origins of Lottie Susan Campbell, later Lottie McCully, is that some time after her birth on 24 May 1871 in Pennsylvania, she was "adopted" by a family named Sutter.  Lottie had a brother named John, who "went to California and never came back", and sisters Emma (later Strohm) and Sarah Belle (later Prentice).

Lottie's death certificate gives the information, supplied by her daughter Gladys Sabin, that Lottie's father's surname was Campbell, and that Lottie was born in "Allenson Park, Penn.", presumably Allison Park. Lottie's sister Sarah Prentice's daughter Edna Hile gave the information on her mother's death certificate in 1957 that Sarah's mother's name was "Sarah Grubbs".

With that in hand, we can start looking for this person --

  • Lottie Susan Campbell or Sutter,
  • born 24 May 1871 in Pennsylvania, probably Allegheny Co.,
  • father's surname Campbell,
  • mother's name Sarah Grubbs,
  • brother John?
  • sister Emma, b.1859,
  • sister Sarah Belle, b.1874

Unfortunately there does not seem to be a single family in Allegheny Co. who fits this profile.  A possibility is "Lotta Sutor", age eight, who appears as "niece" in the family of widow Ursula Sutor in O'Hara Tp. on the 1880 census.  This surname appears variously as Sooter, Sutor, Sutter, and even Suth, so it doesn't seem much of a stretch to connect this little girl with Lottie Campbell.

But since we need concrete proof, not supposition, this is the first post in my attempt to untangle the very great many lines of Campbells, Grubbses, Hodils, and Sutters who appear in northern Allegheny Co. in the 19th century.

Descendants of Gabriel Sedlmayr the Elder (1772-1839) -- Part 2 of 2

An ongoing series of essays and notes about my research into the origins of Michael Sedlmayr (1848-1929) and his wife Marie Schumann (1849-1921) of Bavaria, Germany and Denver, Colorado.

Part 2: Descendants of Gabriel Sedlmayr the Elder (1772-1839)

In an attempt to conclusively eliminate the possibility of Michael Sedlmayr (1848-1929) belonging to the immediate family of Gabriel Sedlmayr the Younger, brewer of Munich, here is the second part (of two) of my report on the descendants of Gabriel the Elder. This information is all available on the internet, but as far as I can see has not before this been collected in one report. To keep it "short", I have removed most of the general notes, but in the interest of thoroughness have left in the source notes.

The second part (below) is those four children of Gabriel the Elder (1772-1839) who had children, those children, and the as-yet-known grandchildren. The first part is posted here.

Please feel free to let me know if there are any corrections!

Descendants of Gabriel Sedlmayr the Elder (1772-1839) -- Part 1 of 2

An ongoing series of essays and notes about my research into the origins of Michael Sedlmayr (1848-1929) and his wife Marie Schumann (1849-1921) of Bavaria, Germany and Denver, Colorado.

Part 2: Descendants of Gabriel Sedlmayr the Elder (1772-1839)

In an attempt to conclusively eliminate the possibility of Michael Sedlmayr (1848-1929) belonging to the immediate family of Gabriel Sedlmayr the Younger, brewer of Munich, here is the first part (of two) of my report on the descendants of Gabriel the Elder. This information is all available on the internet, but as far as I can see has not before this been collected in one report. To keep it "short", I have removed most of the general notes, but in the interest of thoroughness have left in the source notes.

The first part (below) is the children of Gabriel the Elder (1772-1839). The second part is posted here.

Please feel free to let me know if there are any corrections!

The Quest for Michael and Marie (Schumann) Sedlmayr)

The first in an ongoing series of essays and notes about my research into the origins of Michael Sedlmayr (1848-1929) and his wife Marie Schumann (1849-1921) of Bavaria, Germany and Denver, Colorado.

Part 1: The Brewing Sedlmayrs of Munich

Michael Sedlmayr is said to have been born in Bavaria on 14 February 1848. A biography of his future wife, Marie Schumann Sedlmayr, says that Michael was a son of the prominent Sedlmayr brewing family in Munich. "Among their children they had two sons. Marie first met the son who was lame but a good solid citizen. The other son named Michael was the black sheep of the family. And like most black sheep [he] was very good looking and an excellent dancer." [1]

Gabriel Sedlmayr the Elder (1772-1839). Most versions of this portrait around the internet are cropped more closely than this one. [2]

The paterfamilias of the brewing Sedlmayrs was Gabriel (1772-1839), generally known now as Gabriel the Elder. He married Maria Franziska Heiss (Heiß) (1778–1828), and they had eight children:

1. Caecilia (1804-1878), who married Augustin Deiglmayr (1799-1874), burgher and brewer in Munich,

2. Franziska (1806-1873), who married Georg Bar (d.1863), royal forester (kgl. Revierförster) in Niederaltaich, Niederbayern,

3. Joseph (18 July 1808-1886), brewer in Munich, who on 8 April 1845 married Helena Baumann (1822-1875),

4. Gabriel the younger (Gabriel II) (26 February 1811, Munich-1 October 1891, Feldafing, Oberbayern), who in 1840 married Anna Rosalia Schwangart (1818-1892),

5. Amalia (1813-1854), who married Alois Wegmaier (1811-1885), burgher and professional cook (Garkoch) in Munich,

6. Theresia (1815-1898), who married Anton Seidl (1806-1869), burgher and master-baker (Hofbäckermeister) in Munich,

7. Anna (1817-1889), who married Maximilian Wieninger (1809-1884), brewer in Teisendorf, Oberbayern, and

8. Karoline (1821-1891), who married Joseph ritter von Dall'Armi (1816-1853). [5]

Joseph Sedlmayr in 1861. [9]

Gabriel II in later life. [3]

Joseph had with his wife Helena Baumann two sons, Gabriel III (1850-1931) and Georg (1854-1879).

"Übergabe der Brauerei an die Söhne, 1874" [transfer of the brewery to his sons]. Unfortunately, none of the men is identified. Since Gabriel II had only four sons, presumably at least two of these are sons-in-law or nephews. [10]

Gabriel II had with his wife Anna Rosalia Schwangart nine known children (Wikipedia says ten),

1. Joseph (1845-1871),

2. Johann (1846-1900),

3. Carl (1847-1915), who married Josepha Seybold (1854-1930),

4. Anton (1849-1920),

5. Maria (1851-1897) who married Hugo Oberhummer (1844-1905), Kaufm., Inh. d. Kaufhauses Roman Mayr in M., KR, s. NDB X* u. 19*),

6. Rosina (1854-1918), who in 1875 married Johann Joseph "Fritz" von Miller (1840-1921), bronze caster, goldsmith and sculptor, [4]

7. Caecilia (1856-1916), who married Adolph Halbreiter (1839-1898), Bildhauer, Ziseleur, Prof. an d. Kunstgewerbeschule in Dresden, bayer. Prof., s. ADB 49),

8. Helene (1858-1926), who married Wilhelm von Miller (1848-1899), o. Prof. f. allg. Chemie an d. TH München, s. NDB 17), [4] and

9. Lina (1860-1942) who married Max Schlagintweit (1849-1935). [5]

"Der Alte Südfriedhof" (1830) by Wilhelm Scheuchzer. [7]

Many of the Sedlmayr family are buried in the Alter Südfriedhof or "Old South Cemetery" in Munich, among them Anna (née Schwangart, 1818-1891), Anton (1849-1920), Carl (1847-1915), Franziska (née Heiss, d.1828), Gabriel the elder (1772-1839), Gabriel the younger (1811-1891), Johann (1846-1900), Joseph (1845-1871), and Josepha (née Seybold, 1854-1930). [7] Also buried there are a little daughter of Johann's (born and died 1892), and a young Gabriel (1842-1845) who is called "our grandson" of Gabriel the elder but is not specifically assigned to a parent; is this the tenth child that Wikipedia gives to Gabriel the younger?

It seems certain that the Denver Michael Sedlmayr does not belong to the family of Gabriel II, as not only is there little room for him in the chronology of Gabriel II's children, but the list from DB seems fairly magisterial. Michael is certainly of the same generation as Gabriel's children, though, and may be a cousin of some sort. Gabriel II had only one brother, Joseph, for whom the DB gives two sons, naming only one, Gabriel III; other sources give the other son's name as Georg (1854-1879). [8]  It is possible that Michael is a son of Gabriel II's brother Joseph, but this seems unlikely.  Gabriel the elder had at least one brother, Georg (1774-1807), about whom little is yet known.

The conclusion at present is that if Michael was indeed a son of the "prominent family named Sedlmayr" of Munich, then he was probably at the closest a second cousin.  The fact that a number of Michael's sons were at some point in their lives connected to the brewing industries in Chicago and Denver unfortunately does not seem to indicate a Sedlmayr connection, as it seems to have been a common profession for German immigrants.

[1] A typed biography of "Marie Schumann Sedlmayr", of which I have an nth generation photocopy. There is no indication anywhere as to who wrote it or when, but as there is also a similar biography of Marie's daughter Elsie, it is possibly by one of her children or grandchildren.

[2] "Spaten Brewery History" at the "Munich Beer Gardens" wiki. One good thing about being connected to an old beer-brewing family is that there are actually wikis about the history of it; the down side is that there are far more photographs of beer than of the people who brewed it.

[4] "Fritz von Miller" at Wikipedia. Note that the Deutsche-Biographie article gives his name as Friedrich von Miller.  The Wikipedia article gives his full name as Johann Joseph Fritz von Miller, but also clearly states, "In 1875 Fritz von Miller married Rosina Theresia Anna Sedlmayr, a descendant of the brewer Gabriel Sedlmayr", so that there is little doubt it is the same person. "Fritz" is in fact a nickname for "Friedrich". Also according to the Wikipedia article, Rosina's sister Helene’s husband Wilhelm von Miller was one of Fritz von Miller's numerous brothers, who included Ferdinand, sculptor and director of the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich, Oskar, founder of the Deutsches Museum of science and technology, and noted professor of chemistry Wilhelm.

The death of Olof Norman (part 1)

The first indication that Olof Norman (ca.1667-1708) was a soldier comes from the death record of his daughter Anna Olsdotter (1693-1757) in Lia, Näsby parish.

Anna's father is named here "Corporalen med ... lifregimenta til ...fälsboo Companie Olof Norman".

(This register lists the examinations separately by year or series of years; only the later ones are dated specifically. The first section can be assumed from subsequent entries to be no later than 1695.)

Earlier household examination records do not specifically call him "Sold.", as was usually the case, but the name "Norman" instead of a patronymic is in itself an indication that he may have been in the military.

Note that Kirsten is not called "Norman's widow" until the entries for 1718-1720; she is called "Corporal Norman's wife" even as late as 1714 (the first entry on image 85, above).

It is not yet known who is the Jon Olsson with whom Olof and Kirsten were living in the first examination records -- very possibly Olof's father (see below).

The marriage record of Olof Norman and Kerstin Persdotter in 1792 calls him only "Ryttaren Olof Norman", cavalryman Olof Norman.

The death record of Kerstin Persdotter gives the most information yet found:

"Junii 17 / framl. Corporalens lifregementet och fälsbro Compagnie Olof Normans änka Kerstin Pers dr. från Lija. född år 1671 i fröwibij, patre Per Andersson, Matre Kerstin Anders dr. Martii månad. dödde af ålderdoms swaghet d. 9 Junii, ætas på  det 83:de [?] året"

"1753 ... [buried] June 17 / the late Corporal of the Life-guards [in] Fälsbro [Fellingsbro] Company Olof Normans widow Kerstin Persdotter from Lia. Born in the year 1671 in Fröviby, father Per Andersson, mother Kerstin Andersdotter. Married to the above-named 9 October 1692. Had with him two sons and one daughter. Was widowed in the year 1708 when [her] husband was struck down in the Russian war. Was a widow for 45 years, bedridden since March. Died from the decrepitude of old age 9 June, in [her] 83rd year"

The Great Northern War between Sweden and Russia began when Russia, Saxony, and the then-"twin realms" of Denmark and Norway formed an alliance against Sweden under the young Charles XII. Battles in 1708 included Holowczyn, Malatitze, and Lesnaya, as well as Charles's extended invasion of Russia in 1708-1709.

"The Battle of Lesnaya", a 1717 painting by Jean-Marc Nattier (Wikipedia)

An entry in "Skellefteåbygdens soldater 1695-1895" by Lennart Andersson (1995) gives the following entry on page 145: "Olof Norman. Han mönstrade 1710 i Skellefteå och utsändes omedelbart 28 maj till Nymynde och alldeles klart är att han dog samma år på grund av de ryska härjningar som skedde i baltiska staterna samma år", "he signed on in 1710 in Skellefteå and [was] immediately sent out 28 May to Nymynde and [it is] abundantly clear that he died the same year because of the Russian depredations that occurred in the Baltic States in the same year".

Note, though, that it is not at all certain that this is the same Olof Norman, as the name is unusual but certainly not unique, and Skellefteå is well over 800 km from Näsby parish, although is as likely a jumping-off place as any for an army headed to Russia.

image 146 of 241 (Ancestry.com)

Was Olof's father's name Jons? The marriage record of Olof's and Kerstin's surviving son Anders in 1738 gives Olof's name as "Olof Jons Son i Lia", Olof Jons's son of Lia -- this has not yet been found elsewhere.

It is highly unusual, by the way, for fathers to be named in marriage records of this period in Näsby parish -- especially some thirty years after their death. Anders was the only one after Olof to use the name Norman; Anders's six children used the patronymic Andersson or Andersdotter almost exclusively. It is tempting to think that his father's death in battle when Anders was an impressionable age made a deep impact on him.
