"Holiday window showcases man's special craftsmanship"

An article from the "Milwaukee Journal" of 13 December 1984.

Nellie NELSON KLAPPROTH, the wife of Henry Herman KLAPPROTH and mother of the Henry in the article, was the daughter of Andrew NELSON (born Andreas Severin NIELSEN in 1872 in Vestervig parish, Thisted, Denmark), son of Niels CHRISTENSEN and Karen NIELSEN of Thisted.

Parishes in Thisted amt, Denmark

Danish counties, or amter, were historically divided into districts, herreder, and then into parishes, sogner. The parish was the unit responsible for keeping church-books, which recorded births, confirmations, marriages, deaths, and changes of residence between parishes.

Nels B. NELSON (1870-1963) was born in Vestervig parish in Thisted amt. This map shows the parishes in Thisted. His mother's family had lived in Bedsted parish, in nearby Hassing herred, for at least two generations, at a place called Broegaarde (also spelled Brogaarde) -- this was the source of the "B" of Nels's middle name, as he was baptized Niels Brogaarde Nielsen.

Grave of Karen Kristensen in Sundby

"Karen Kristensen f. [født] Villerup [born] i Bedsted 10.8.1842 [died] i Sundby 27.11.1936 Herrens engel lejrer sig trindt omkring dem som frygte Ham Ps. 34, 8"

Karen NIELSEN was born 10 August 1842 in Bedsted, probably in Thyland, Denmark, or possibly in Vesterby. She married Niels CHRISTENSEN around 1860, and died 27 November 1935 in Sundby, probably in Jutland, Denmark.

The Bible quotation is from Psalms 34, verse 8: "The Lord's angel is encamped around those who fear Him."

Her name in some family records is Karen VILLERUP, but it does not seem that she was ever known by that name during her lifetime.  She lived in a village called Villerup, in Thisted, for a while in the late 1860s and early 1870s.

Seth Palmer family

Seth PALMER family, ca.1900. Standing, from left: Samantha PETERS (1870-1936), Sadie (Sarah) PETERS (1873-1946), Abe (Abraham Charles) PETERS (1868-1927), possibly Mary PETERS or a PALMER girl, Amos PETERS (1874-1954), and Ida (Ida Mae) PETERS (1877-1951). Seated, from left: Susannah (Susannah PETERS) PALMER (1848-1922), Earl PALMER (b.1890), Seth R. PALMER (1854-1944), and Owen PALMER (b.1887).

The family were Brethren, as can be seen by their plain dress and the bonnets on the women. The only Palmer daughter died before 1900. It is possible that the unidentified young woman is Mary (by then married to Frank WARREN) and was not plain like the rest of her family.

A note on the back of the copy says that Christian NELSON identified the people in the photo. The names of Owen and Earl were apparently switched on the label, as the boy seated at far right is clearly some years older than the one in the middle.

Whereabouts of original photograph unknown.

Abraham Peters family?

Unidentified PETERS family, probably Abraham (born 29 February 1868) and his wife Bertie (Bertie Alice PETERS, born 9 Jun 1881), with children Herbert (1902-1976), William (1907-1970), and Anna Belle (1905-1979), possibly ca.1910.

Color photocopy; whereabouts of original photograph unknown.
